Max Lord

Max Lord is a Boston-based improvisor who has worked in a variety of rock, noise, electronic and improv settings. Though originally identifying as a percussionist, since 2000 he has performed with Buchla electronic instruments including the Marimba Lumina, an exotic mallet controller. His recorded work as Ghost Grass recalls mid-century electronic experimentation as often as more modern improvised approaches, and is intimately tied to the magnetic medium on which it is created.

As a collaborator and organizer, he is closely associated with the experimental movement community. Japanese butoh and its natural, primitive aesthetic are currently a primary influence on his work. He often accompanies butoh-influenced choreographer Ellen Godena and her company Umi No Bodi. They present collaborative improvised work as a duo, and with other movement artists through their Zeroplan performance series. In 2009, Max became a member of the Mobius Artist Group.

Max holds a BS in Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1995) and was one of the founding members of Berklee Media, where he helped to create the first online music degree program. He currently runs his own multi-disciplinary practice WIR35, where he creates experimental design, web and music software.
